Before Needles started under Nepenthes in 1997, Keizo Shimizu started HOGGS, which was the birth of the very beginning of what was to become of Needles. Hoggs ended shortly because of a trademark dispute over the name, so they eventually called it Needles. The early direction of the brand still remained the same releasing more playful designs than its parent brand Nepenthes. HOGGS was doing cut & sew rebuilds and garments like this cargo shirts. Not to mention full zip hoodies all the way back in the 90’s. Which if you think about it was well ahead of its time, even before brands like A Bathing Ape caught on to the idea.
It is known that the inspiration for Needles came after Keizo saw Miles Davis wearing a jacket while performing in the 60’s, so he decided to make a collection based on it. Since the beginning of Hoggs / Needles Keizo’s goal has been to “fill a void” of what needs to be seen in the modern day; influenced by an avant guard perspective.
